Epilepsy – Holistic Treatments – Alternative Medicine

Epilepsy is a disorder that is characterized by the tendency to have recurring seizures. Normally, brain cells communicate with each other via electrical impulses working together to control body movements and keep organs functioning properly. When someone has epilepsy, this normal pattern may be interrupted by thousands to millions of electrical impulses that occur at the same time and are more intense than usual, producing abnormal brain electrical activity and resulting in a seizure. These bursts of electrical impulses can affect body movements, sensations or consciousness. In about 50 to 70% of all cases of epilepsy, the cause of the abnormal electrical impulses is unknown.

A seizure is a sudden disruption of the brain’s normal electrical activity, which can cause a loss of consciousness and make the body twitch and jerk, called convulsions. Many people with epilepsy find that they have more seizures during times of stress or anxiety. Nearly 40,000 Scots live with the condition.

Patients on anti-seizure medications must see their doctor regularly for blood tests to check the levels of the drugs in the bloodstream and to monitor any side effects. Epilepsy Foundation recommends a trip to the doctor at least once a year for a check up.

Epilepsy Holistic Treatments

If you have epilepsy immediately reduce your alcohol, coffee and artificial sweeteners from your diet. Attacks can be triggered by binging on alcohol as it depletes both B vitamins and attacks the structure of the brain.

Columbus Eggs – Omega 3 fatty acids

The brain is made up of two things water and fat. Due to the amount of omega 6 fatty acids we consume in our diets you have to balance them with omega 3’s. You can also get omega 3’s by taking a dessert spoonful of flax seed oil daily. Columbus eggs are available at most supermarkets and are high in omega 3 fatty acids. The chickens are fed flax seed as part of their diet. Try and have boiled eggs as frying affects the quality of the essential fatty acid.

Vitamin B – StarGate Nutrition Vitamins

Researchers have found that infants who have fits can be helped with vitamin B6. The enzyme that coverts glutamic acid to gamma-aminobutyuric acid (GABA) an important inhibitory brain calming neurotransmitter is activated when B6 binds itself to it. When GABA levels are reduced it makes it abnormally easy for seizures to occur. The vitamin has to be in a food state form and can be crushed into a powder to feed to a child.

Calcium Magnesium

Lots of epilepsy sufferers have biochemical disturbances, including hypocalcaemia, which can be the precipitant factor in the causation of epileptic seizures. Naturopaths find that most people with epilepsy have low calcium levels and when they are repaired seizures decrease. Kayath et al discuss how hypocalcaemia is an important factor in the alcoholic convulsive population since ethanol reduces calcium and magnesium levels. In nature cure texts they recommend that you ensure adequate calcium levels. Magnesium works with calcium therefore one has to be taken with the other to stop depletion of the minerals. Magnesium is nature’s tranquiliser and is tremendously supportive to the nervous system. However you need to be taking these minerals in a food form found in StarGate Nutrition products.

Manganese

Several research studies show that blood and hair manganese levels are low in epileptics, with the correlation that those typically having the highest seizure rates show the lowest levels of manganese. (L.S. Hurley et al). Manganese is a component of the antioxidant enzyme manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) that will soak up free radicals that cause cellular damage. Rich dietary sources of manganese include nuts, seeds and wheat germ.

StarGate Nutrition nutrient material has been designed to be 16 times more effective, 5 times more utilised and 6 times more retained than the vast majority (99%) of nutrient material on the nutrition market. They have studied our material through independent laboratories using a number of biological studies to see its effectiveness over a number of development years. Their technology is based and confirmed by over 77 scientific papers and by a number of medical and nutrition Professors and prestigious institutions. They use 100% natural and totally allergen free.

Epilepsy sufferers have to avoid the herbs ephedra, ginseng and ginkgo.

Las Vegas CityCenter’s holistic spa now taking reservations (or, ‘Why I need to go to Vegas’)

Sin City’s sustainable wonder, CityCenter, is unveiling its the intimate Vdara Health & Beauty -a “sensuous spa sanctuary” focused on holistic health and well being – on December 1, 2009.

The 18,000-square-foot, two-level spa, salon and fitness center is committed to “sustainable luxury”. Selected by Green Spa Network to be network’s very first Las Vegas member, Vdara Health & Beauty carefully selects retail partners that share its concern for the environment; utilizing organic or wild-crafted, paraben-free products, implementing a recycling program and use of recycled paper for spa materials, and aproviding natural nail services using a vegan treatment line.

Vdara is an all-suite hotel and spa designed within the new Las Vegas CityCenter that caters to those who love the excitement of Las Vegas but prefer to enjoy it in an exclusive, non-gaming and smoke-free environment.

Solidifying CityCenter’s commitment to sustainability, Vdara has achieved LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Physically connected to Bellagio and adjacent to ARIA Resort & Casino, Vdara will offer access to all of the entertainment, gaming, shopping, dining and nightlife at CityCenter and throughout Las Vegas, while also providing a retreat from it all.

Soothing calm amidst the bustle of Vegas

Located on the second level of the CityCenter’s new Vdara, guests are welcomed by a two-story waterfall comprised of shimmering strings of beads that glisten as water cascades down them into the reflective pool below. Sapele wood floors with mink marble and river-stone floor accents will create a sleek and modern look throughout the space.

Each level of the spa will express a distinct atmosphere laced with luxury. The first level will be a light, social space where patrons can mingle in the main reception lobby, enter the fitness center and salon, browse the spa boutique or enjoy a glass of bubbly at the Champagne Bar. The wellness spa on the second level will inspire a calm and soothing energy.

Even the lobby itself will feature a champagne bar that will include a thoughtful selection of champagne and wine for guests to enjoy while relaxing in the lobby or experiencing a manicure, pedicure or hair service in the salon.

Finding wellness

Eleven private treatment rooms, retreats, and serene lounges featuring inviting soaking tubs and dramatic circular waterfalls allow guests to immerse themselves in complete relaxation while enjoying a selection of herbal teas and apothecary-infused water, redwood saunas and eucalyptus steam rooms.

Spa treatments, comprised of a variety of massages, body treatments and skin care services, focus on holistic health by incorporating high-grade and organic ingredients derived from fruits, herbs, flowers, vegetables and oils.

The salon at Vdara Health & Beauty will boast a full menu of services for men and women including nail care by “SpaRitual.” Known for creating eco-friendly products, SpaRitual has developed a collection of sophisticated nail products that are DBP, formaldehyde and toluene-free, as well as the first spa treatment line of vegan nail care products.

For those looking for a more active way to let off some steam, a variety of cardio equipment with individual entertainment centers, exercise machines and free weights will be available in the spa’s fitness center. Fitness classes will include strength training and yoga, with personal trainers and yoga instructors available for individual or group instruction. A registered dietician also will be available for nutritional consultation.

On the upper level of the spa, guests will be able to enjoy spa and salon treatments poolside at Sky Pool & Lounge – boasting six spa cabanas with interior seating, outdoor chaise lounges and private plunge pools. Poolside spa treatments will feature Akhassa, a line inspired by spa rituals from Thailand with properties of lemongrass, Kaffir lime, jasmine and hibiscus flower.

Top Spa Trend Predictions for 2010

According to SpaFinder, here are the top trend predictions for 2010:

- Prevention: With the current global healthcare crisis, prevention is going to be the next "it" word. Nothing new here. As an aesthetician, the most important thing I teach my clients is prevention.

- Ever heard of hammam? If you haven't, this will be the year to learn its meaning. I also have not heard of this, but here's what I found:
Hammam means "spreader of warmth". Middle Easterners have practiced this for years, and its just now becoming popular in the U.S. It is a steam bath. First you relax in a room called, "the warm room." It is heated continuously with dry hot air. From there, bathers move to an even hotter room called the "hot room." After relaxing, and sweating in this room, you splash yourself with cold water. Then you recieve a massage, and then retire to a cooling room to relax. Sounds good to me.

- Belonging to a Spa- much like belonging to a gym, you no longer go, but you belong. More and more spas are offering membership programs and are also casted as social hubs for other activities. This is a pretty cool idea, but I would think it also costs a pretty penny.

-Online Spa- Nowadays everything is online. It is more accessible to see information about spa businesses and what they offer. You can book treatments, receive specials, join social networking sites through spa businesses, and now can even find the nearest spa on your cellphone.

- The hybrid spa- I'm seeing this a lot now. There's not just day spas anymore, there's medical spas, wellness centers, fitness centers, hospitals, doctors and specialists, dentists, that are all starting to offer spa elements into their businesses.

The industry is growing exponentially and will only continue to do so. So many of us lead busy, stressful lives, and what a great way to unload and relax than to be pampered and recieve services that we know are going to benefit not only our skin, our appearances, but also our health. Stay spas are also growing because now you can travel to special destinations and book special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, wedding parties, and so forth, with endless treatment options and amenities.

A Holistic Approach: Set Yourself Free From Emotional Eating.

Sadly, the information available to you on binge, compulsive and emotional eating is often not very holistic (meaning, treatment doesn’t usually address you, the individual). When the solution is not holistic, this often means you are taken down a road of antidepressants, appetite suppressants and left to figure it out for yourself. This simply doesn’t work.
When women come to me for help they’ve usually been severely restricting calories for weeks at a time “being really good” only to start binge eating and feeling out of control. It’s very cyclical and if you want to break the habit you must be willing to try something new.
I have some strategies and recommendations so you don’t feel alone – there is help!! You would be shocked to know the number of women I consult on a weekly basis with disordered eating. Rest assured, I can relate as it was all too familiar to me in my teen years. Here are some joyous health tips, a holistic approach.

* Stop dieting. Deprivation leads to cravings. This is one of the biggest mistakes I see people make. They eat very little or skip breakfast and then gorge themselves at dinner. If this sounds like you, then focus on eating a healthy breakfast (which includes all 3 macronutrients: complex carb, lean protein and good fat), delicious lunch, small afternoon snack and a healthy dinner. If you ignore your hunger signals, you basically turn your appetite control hormones into OVERDRIVE at night making you want to eat everything in sight and then wake up with no appetite the next morning. Always start your day out right with this: http://joyoushealth.wordpress.com/2010/03/02/lemon-water-how-much-why/

* Avoid temptation. You’re much more likely to overeat if you have junk food, desserts, and unhealthy snacks in the house. Remove the temptation by clearing your fridge and cupboards of your favorite binge foods. Have a treat once in a while when you are feeling emotional stable. This will help you come to grasp with the fact that food is NOT your enemy. Avoid labeling foods as “good” and “bad”.

* Never ever feel guilty about an episode. If it happens and you binge/overeat, forgive yourself the next morning and be done with it. Avoid punishing yourself by restricting your calories, this is going to set you up for another episode – do you see how it’s a vicious cycle?

* Love yourself. Emotional eating gets out of control when we don’t put ourselves first and then use food to soothe us. Easier said than done right? You might be a mom, a successful business owner, a daughter looking after ill-parents — but remember, you will be a far better care-taker if you always put yourself first and then take care of others. So how do you do this? Here’s the first step to embrace your feminine side, appreciate your beauty and learn to love yourself again: http://joyoushealth.wordpress.com/2010/03/04/love-your-nakedness-heres-how/

* Balance those brain chemicals with exercise. Not only will exercise help you love your body more by increasing your confidence, but it also lifts depression, improves overall health, and reduces stress. The natural mood-boosting effects of exercise can help put a stop to emotional eating

* Do something that makes you joyous. Everyone has a passion or a therapy for healing. For me, I love to paint so if I’m feeling particularly overwhelmed with life, I turn to my canvas and I express my emotions by painting. About a month ago I consulted a client who would binge and purge about 2-3x per month. We uncovered in her session that she LOVED animals. So she decided she would volunteer at the animal shelter 1-2x per week on the days that she felt particularly vulnerable. Find your joy and just do it.

This is really the tip of the iceburg in terms of holistic strategies for overcoming emotional eating. The key is that the approach must be individual to you. Last summer when I was developing the curriculum for EAT WELL FEEL WELL, I scoured the book stores and the internet looking for resources and strategies to help my students. I came across this amazing writer, Marcelle Pick who is an OB/GYN NP and an expert in emotional eating. She has a very valuable article which is very holistic-minded and I encourage you to check it out.

In my practice, I consult women from all over the world because this problem is widespread. Please know that there is help out there for you and you are not alone. This isn’t something that you just have to “deal” with. There are so many things you can do to feel better now. I hope my article brings you some peace of mind that you have the power within you to heal your emotions and feel fabulous again! The side effect of getting yourself back on track is of course… joyous health!

Acupuncture Health:

Acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and dates back thousands of years. It involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the skin or applying various other techniques to the acupuncture points to bring about healing.

The ancient Chinese proposed that a balance of two opposing yet complementary forces of energy, called Yin and Yang, sustain every living thing. Half the body’s organs and meridians are defined as Yin in relation to the other half, which are defined as Yang. When Yin and Yang are out of balance in the body, disease may occur.

Digestive – colitis, constipation, diarrhea, gastritis, ulcer.
Emotional – anxiety, depression.
General – chronic fatigue syndrome, giving up smoking, muscle injuries, obesity, stress management, tiredness, travel sickness.
Gynecological – heavy menstrual bleeding, painful periods, menopausal symptoms, pre-menstrual syndrome.
Muscular-skeletal – back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tennis elbow and whiplash.
Neurological – Bell’s palsy, carpal tunnel syndrome, headache, Meniere’s disease, migraine, pain, paralysis, shingles.
Respiratory – asthma, bronchitis, common cold, heavy fever.
Vascular – hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, varicose veins.

For many conditions where acupuncture can be used, the evidence has not been systematically reviewed, or the current scientific evidence to prove that it is effective is not yet established. Clinical guidelines published in many different countries have found that acupuncture is moderately helpful in a wide range of conditions, particularly those which involve pain.

How acupuncture is performed:

Choosing an acupuncturist:

Some health care practitioners offer acupuncture after completing a short course. However, the philosophy of acupuncture is complex, so you should only use a qualified acupuncturist. From 2000, all Victorian acupuncturists and Chinese herbalists have to be registered. You don’t need a referral from your doctor to see an acupuncturist.
